Abstract

Objective: To assess the impact of obesity on the BP of young university students at the Escola Superior de Saúde Dr. Lopes Dias.

Materials and Methods: Data collection included measurement of weight and height, with subsequent assessment of blood pressure. The variables were coded and analyzed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences, version 27.

Main Results: Were included 266 students from the Escola Superior de Saúde Dr. Lopes Dias aged between 18-34 years, 70 males and 196 females. High normal blood pressure was present in 8.3% of the students and hypertension in 8.4% of the participants, higher in males with a statistically significant relationship. Pre-obesity was present in 15.8% of the participants and grade 1 obesity in 1.9%. There was a higher prevalence of hypertension in individuals with a high body mass index.

Conclusion: It is confirmed that university students with an obese adipose profile have a higher prevalence of high blood pressure.
