Abstract

Arterial hypertension is one of the leading causes of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. In approximately 5% to 10% of cases is classified as secondary hypertension, with identifiable causes such as the use of certain medications. Venlafaxine—a serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor (SNRI)— at higher doses may induce elevated blood pressure due to increased noradrenergic activity. We report the case of a 21-year-old woman with a history of generalized anxiety disorder, overwheight, and hypertension, who was being treated with venlafaxine 150 mg once daily and Ramipril 5 mg once daily. She was referred for investigation of secondary causes of hypertension. Laboratory and imaging studies revealed no significant abnormalities. Venlafaxine dosage was progressively reduced, with a significant improvement in blood pressure suggesting that the use of this drug was the most likely cause of her hypertension. This case highlights the importance of close blood pressure monitoring in patients using antidepressants, as well as the need for therapeutic adjustments to minimize cardiovascular risk.
