Abstract

Introduction: Orthostatic hypotension is characteristic as a clinical condition that affects the majority of the senior population and is manifested by the fall in blood pressure values after the passage to orthostasis. This condition is also associated with a high risk of mortality and morbidity.

Objectives: To verify whether symptomatology after orthostatism is associated with the presence of orthostatic hypotension, as well as to identify individuals with orthostatic hypotension. Additionally, to understand if there is a relationship between orthostatic hypotension and drug comorbidities/therapy.

Methods: This is an analytical, cross-sectional and observational study, whose sample consists of 95 individuals, of which 73.7% belong to females and 26.3% to males, aged between 65 and 99 years.
Data collection occurred during the month of April. A blood pressure was evaluated in decubitus, and two after the 1st and 3rd minute of orthostasis. A questionnaire was also conducted about brain and cardiovascular risk factors and personal history of heart disease and stroke.

Results: The prevalence of orthostatic hypotension was 5.3%, of which 4.2% were female and 1.1% male. The age class with the highest prevalence was the class from 85 to 94 years (3.2%). The most frequently encountered cardiovascular risk factors were hypertension and sedentary lifestyle, with a prevalence of 62.1% and 38.9% respectively.

Discussion: No statistical significance was found between the variables evaluated and the occurrence of orthostatic hypotension, although there is some degree of association between the occurrence of orthostatic hypotension and the presence of HTA (p=0.054) and older ages (p=0.074).

Conclusion: It was found that the prevalence of orthostatic hypotension obtained is below the prevalence found in other Portuguese studies.
