Abstract

Introduction: Arterial hypertension is identified as one of the main relevant risk factors in the development of cardiovascular diseases, being considered a global public health problem. The higher prevalence of this pathology, associated with other complications, demonstrates the importance of carrying out the present study.

Objective: To determine the prevalence of hypertensive individuals in the adult population and the relationship with cerebrovascular risk factors.

Methods: This is an analytical, observational, cross-sectional study, with a random selection method by clusters. Three blood pressure assessments were performed with the individual seated, data on risk factors were obtained through the application of a questionnaire. Subsequently, the data were treated and statistically analyzed using the statistical analysis program Statistical Package for the Social Science®.

Results: The sample consisted of 961 subjects residing in the municipality of Idanha-a-Nova, 48.3% female and 51.7% male. The average age of the individuals surveyed was 58.80±17.005 years, 62.1% had body mass index values above 25kg/ m2 and the most prevalent risk factor in the district is alcoholic habits, with 59.9%. A prevalence of arterial hypertension of 46.7% was found, being more prevalent in males (52.74%) and in ages between 60 and 69 years of age (21.5%).

Discussion: The present study presents results that converge with those found in similar investigations, in Idanha-a-Nova according to the PAI study was found a prevalence of arterial hypertension of 51%, while in the interior of the country according to the PAP study, of 45.8% and in Portugal, in 2019, a percentage of 43.1% of hypertensive individuals was recorded.

Conclusion: There was a high prevalence of arterial hypertension and orthostatic hypotension in the municipality of Idanha- a-Nova, a worrying factor, as they represent risk factors for morbidity and mortality from cardiovascular disease.
