Abstract

Introduction: Chronic pain affects 20 to 30% of the global population and ranks among the leading causes of disability, alongside cardiovascular diseases. Chronic inflammation resulting from pain may represent a risk factor for the development of cardiovascular diseases, and thus, the aim of this work is to clarify the relationship between chronic pain and cardiovascular diseases.
Methods: A narrative review of the scientific literature on the relationship between chronic pain and cardiovascular diseases was conducted, using a search for review articles from the last 10 years on PubMed®.
Results: Chronic pain is associated with elevated blood pressure, making hypertension control more challenging in individuals with chronic pain. Furthermore, individuals with chronic pain have nearly twice the likelihood of having cardiovascular diseases compared to those without pain. Although the strongest association was found for acute myocardial infarction, relationships were also reported with dyslipidemia, arrhythmias, coronary artery disease, and stroke. There was also an association between chronic pain and cardiovascular mortality, particularly with higher pain intensity. Discussion: The results have significant implications for the practice of general and family medicine, emphasizing a holistic approach for patients with chronic pain and cardiovascular diseases.
Conclusion: Chronic pain is associated with a higher prevalence of hypertension, cardiovascular diseases, and cardiovascular mortality, highlighting the crucial need for early identification and appropriate management of chronic pain to reduce cardiovascular risk and improve patients’ quality of life.
