Abstract

Introduction: Hypertension is a common and relevant risk factor in the development of several cerebrovascular diseases. The high prevalence of this pathology, associated with other complications, demonstrates the importance of carrying out this study.

Objective: The main objectives of this study were to assess the blood pressure of the population of Castelo Branco, guide hypertensive respondents, warn of the risks of this pathology, determine the most prevalent risk factors in the district and determine the percentage of orthostatic hypotension.

Methods: Participants were randomly selected by clusters. For data collection, 3 blood pressure assessments were performed with the individual seated and, after 3 minutes, the last one in an orthostatic position, the remaining data were obtained through the application of a questionnaire. Subsequently, the data were processed and statistically analyzed using the statistical analysis program SPSS Statistics®, version 25.

Results: Sample consisting of 1040 adult individuals residing in the municipality of Castelo Branco, 55,3% female and 44,7% male. The average age of the individuals surveyed was 55,52±16,80 years, with 60,4% having body mass index values above 25kg/m2 and 57,7% claimed to have sedentary lifestyle habits, this being the most prevalent risk factor in the district. A prevalence of arterial hypertension of 45,9% was found, being more prevalent in females (52,6%) and in ages between 60 and 69 years old (30,6%). A prevalence of 5,5% of orthostatic hypotension was determined, with 50,9% belonging to the female sex.

Discussion: The present study presents results that corroborate those found in investigations of the same scope, and in the first phase of the PPABB study, in Castelo Branco, prevalence’s of arterial hypertension of 46.1% were found in the central region of the country, according to the study PAP, 45.8% and in Portugal, in 2019, a percentage of 43.1% of hypertensive individuals was registered.

Conclusion: The prevalence of arterial hypertension and orthostatic hypotension present in the municipality of Castelo Branco should be valued, as they represent important risk factors for morbidity and mortality from cardiovascular disease.
